Let us take you through a recent re-slating job in Edinburgh to show you what is involved.
Although slate tiles can last for many years the original tiles on this property were cracked and chipped. Not only were they losing their look but the roof was starting to leak too.
Firstly the old slates were stripped off. The roof was then re-felted using breathable membrane Tyvek felt. There is no point in laying quality slate tiles on an inadequate surface. The Tyvek membrane reduces condensation and prevents water and draughts from penetrating the roof space. The membrane can also withstand large changes in temperature which, although may not be a huge issue in Edinburgh, does increase the lifetime of the felt.
Much of the slate imported to the UK comes from Spain, China and Brazil and comes with very varied prices and qualities. We use the highest quality Spanish slate to ensure your roof will keeps its looks for years to come giving strength, durability and performance!
